Vampire Boyfriend
Vampire Boyfriend is a dreamy altpop band based in Rotterdam, led by singer-songwriter Janine van Osta (also known for her solo work as Saint Helena Dove and as a longtime member of Broeder Dieleman’s band). With roots in Zeeland and Flanders, the band crafts melodic, introspective songs that flirt with darkness while radiating warmth and emotional clarity.
Van Osta writes all of the band’s material, often addressing her younger self with both vulnerability and a wry smile. “With Saint Helena Dove, I tried to please others,” she says. “With Vampire Boyfriend, I try to please myself.” The result is a sound shaped by personal storytelling, 60s-inspired pop, and hints of goth and grunge, carried by Van Osta’s distinct voice and arresting melodies.
The band’s aesthetic playfully nods to horror films, occult symbolism, and teen goth nostalgia — yet at its core is a message of self-acceptance and soft rebellion. Even Lucifer is welcomed with love. “My thirteen-year-old, Green Day–loving goth self is thrilled with what I’m doing now,” Van Osta says. “So is my six-year-old self in a princess dress listening to ABBA.”
Fans of acts like Melody’s Echo Chamber, Lucy Dacus, or Unknown Mortal Orchestra will feel right at home, but Vampire Boyfriend invites everyone in, holds your hand, and shows you that the dark isn’t so scary after all.
